CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
– Fiódor Dostoyevski
Main Plot:
Raskolnikov, overwhelmed by misery and convinced that some people have the right to commit crimes if it is for the greater good, murders an old moneylender (Aliona Ivanovna) and accidentally also her sister (Lizaveta), who witnesses the crime. He does so believing that with that act he could free himself from poverty and accomplish great things.
However, after the murder, Raskolnikov begins to suffer a deep moral and psychological crisis. Guilt, fear and isolation consume him. Although he tries to justify himself with his theory that there are “extraordinary” men who can be above the law, his conscience will not leave him alone.
During the novel, he interacts with several key characters, such as:
· Sonia Marmeládova, a deeply religious young prostitute, who represents compassion and redemption.
· Porfirio Petróvich, the cunning examining magistrate, who suspects Raskolnikov but seeks to bring him to confess by psychological means.
· Dunia, his sister, and Razumikhin, his loyal friend.
Finally, influenced by Sonia and exhausted by his inner torment, Raskolnikov surrenders to the police. He is sentenced to forced labor in Siberia, where Sonia accompanies him, and where he begins a process of personal redemption.
Central themes:
· Guilt and Redemption
· The conflict between good and evil
· Poverty and social injustice
· Morality and inner punishment
